Extension Courses
Saint Bernard School students have many opportunities to take part in academic courses beyond the traditional high school program.
Advanced Placement
You don't need to be top of your class to be an AP student, but you'll want to be prepared for the AP course you choose. Some AP classes have recommended courses you should take first, and all AP courses ask that you come willing to do your best work. To choose an AP course that's right for you, talk to a counselor or teacher about the subjects that interest you and ask about your options for learning the skills to help you succeed (www.collegeboard.org).
At Saint Bernard School, students who are interested in taking part in an AP course must have the approval of the department head. If a student enrolls in an AP course, they are agreeing to take the AP test in May. The cost of the AP test, which is set by College Board, is to be paid by the student.
If you would like further information on the grading standards of the Advanced Placement program, please see your School Counselor.
Virtual High School
Virtual High School classes are considered when there are irreconcilable scheduling conflicts or if a student is interested in a course that Saint Bernard does not offer. The School Counselors assist students with selecting and scheduling courses, while academic support is provided through Virtual High School. Limited seating is available. The fee is currently $150.
Three Rivers High School Partnership (HSP)
HSP is open to 4 eligible juniors and/or seniors who wish to study subjects not offered in high school, broaden their education, earn college credits, explore career options or build on their skills. Eligible students attend TRCC and are funded for one college course per semester on a space available basis. Special fees, such as course lab fees and art studio fees, books/supplies and transportation are the student’s responsibility. (Priority is given to seniors.)
New London Scholars at Connecticut College
The School Counseling Department is asked to nominate two eligible seniors for enrollment in a 100 level, four-credit course each fall and spring semester. Tuition is waived, however, special fees, books and transportation are the responsibility of the student.
