Honor Societies
National Honor Society - Thomas Dooley Chapter
National Honor Society (NHS) promotes and upholds the strong values of academics, service, leadership, and character within the school community. Members offer tutoring during their free class periods as well as every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday after school.
Each year, our NHS sponsors at least two blood drives in coordination with the American Red Cross.
Eligibility for National Honor Society is first established by maintaining a non-weighted cumulative grade point average of 90 or above, and having taken at least four Honors or AP courses through the first semester of the Junior year. Students must then apply for membership and are selected by a faculty council which judges based on students’ leadership, character and service.
Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society
Mu Alpha Theta is dedicated to inspiring keen interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics. Juniors and Seniors who demonstrate excellent ability in honors mathematics and other classes may apply. Underclassmen taking a course that is significantly more advanced than their grade level (Algebra II or higher for Freshmen, Precalculus or higher for Sophomores) may also apply. Members of Alpha Theta participate in tutoring and peer enrichment programs. Each May members put on a school-wide MathCon event.
Chi Alpha Mu Middle School Honor Society
Chi Alpha Mu stands for Creative Adventures in Mathematics and seeks to promote enjoyment and understand of mathematics by middle school students. One of the goals of Chi Alpha Mu is to recognize middle school students who are performing at a high level in mathematics.
Participation in Chi Alpha Mu and continuing in the high school honor society Alpha Theta will help students prepare for some of the unique higher level mathematics courses offered at Saint Bernard School. Some of these courses are Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations, Mathematics Research, and Astrophysics.
To be considered for membership in Chi Alpha Mu, students must be ahead of grade level in mathematics, have an A average or numerical equivalent and complete an application process.
Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica - Papa Francisco Chapter
The mission of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (Spanish National Honor Society) is to recognize high school achievement in Spanish and to promote interest in Hispanic culture and studies.
Members offer tutoring to students in need of assistance with their work in Spanish, and perform community service in our local Latino communities.
La Société Honoraire de Français – Charlemagne Chapter
The Société Honoraire de Français (French Honor Society) recognizes students who have shown
outstanding effort and ability in the study of French language and culture, as well as
maintaining a level of excellence across the curriculum. The mission of the French Honor
Society is to promote interest in Francophone studies and culture.
Members of the French Honor Society provide tutoring to underclassmen in French and
participate in peer enrichment programs that promote Francophone culture. Each year,
members of the French Honor Society perform a community service project related to the
mission: last year, the students organized a clothing drive to donate to those in Haiti.
International Thespian Society
The Saint Bernard Chapter of the International Thespian Society (ITS) was founded in 2017. High school students who have participated in at least two shows, either acting or backstage, and have a cumulative average of 88 or above. Students at ITS member schools have the opportunity to participate in festivals at district, state and national level. Currently, ITS has chapters at 4,700 schools with over 100,000 student members.
National Art Honor Society
The National Art Honor Society (NAHS) recognizes students who have shown an outstanding ability in art. Its members are students of strong character, who foster excellence and a dedicated spirit to the pursuit of art, and who bring art to the attention of the school and community through service. NAHS projects include tutoring, creation of holiday ornaments for the faculty and staff, design and creation of “window” paintings for two science labs, and design and creation of a department mural.
Tri-M Music Honor Society
The Tri-M Music Honor Society, sponsored by the National Association for Music Education is the only national honor society for music students in the United States. Tri-M gives student musicians the opportunity to "perform, lead and serve."
The Saint Bernard School Chapter #3055 of the Tri-M Music Honor Society was founded in 1998. Since then, Tri-M has been active in assisting the growth of the music department, as well as raising funds for a variety of musical and non-musical endeavors.
To join Tri-M, a student in grades 9 through 12 must be selected by both a member of the music faculty and their peers.
Tri-M Music Honor Society Junior Chapter for Middle School Students
The junior chapter of Tri-M is open to middle school students in 7th and 8th grades and provides additional opportunities for students to improve their musicality, increase their confidence, and develop leadership and mentorship skills. There is also a community service component to the honor society.
Both chapters of Tri-M work together and assist one another. To be considered for Tri-M Junior Chapter, students must have at least one year of music classes with a grade of A or the numerical equivalent, in these music classes, have a least a B average or the numerical equivalent in all other classes, and complete an application process.
