Theology

The Theology curriculum is a central part of every student’s education from Grades 6 through 12. It is our goal to provide students with opportunities to become aware of the richness of the Catholic faith, to deepen their spiritual growth and development, and to foster an intellectual inquiry into the study of Theology.  Students of all faith backgrounds are embraced at Saint Bernard School.  All religious knowledge and experiences serve as enhancements to the richness of the classroom and our pursuit of a global education for each student.

English

The English Department strives to give our students the tools to communicate clearly and to evaluate the communications of others. From Grades 6 through 12, our students are exposed to literature, writing skills, and vocabulary in a planned learning sequence. Students are encouraged to use methods of learning best suited to their needs and learning styles, including independent research, small group projects, small and large group discussions, etc. Classes for Grades 6, 7, and 8 are heterogeneously grouped. At the high school level, classes are offered at the Advanced and Honors levels, encompassing the Global Studies Program with a focus on World Literature, British Literature, and American Literature.  AP English Literature and Composition is also offered in grade 12. Electives such as Creative Writing and Public Speaking are open to students in grades 11 and 12. TOP

Mathematics

The Mathematics Department matches each student with an individualized program of study that progresses with them from Grades 6 through 12. We have the most advanced course offerings in eastern Connecticut, including courses in AP Calculus, Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations, Astrophysics and Game Theory.  Freshmen begin their course of study by taking Geometry or Honors Geometry, provided they have successfully completed Algebra I in Grade 8 and scored well on the entrance exam and the Algebra I placement test.  An enrichment program for high-performing middle school students has also been introduced. TOP

Social Studies

The Social Studies Department provides comprehensive and sequential courses of study for students in Grades 6 through 12 to deepen students’ appreciation of the historical forces that have shaped the world in which they live. Critical thinking skills and global awareness are developed through an in-depth study of both Western and non-Western civilizations. Special emphasis is put on developing historical thinking skills, examining primary and secondary sources, and interpreting major historical events through a global lens.  Current events also serve as a driving force in all classes, as students understand the roots behind events while maintaining an active awareness of our present and future. The department seeks to instill in its students a sense of responsibility to be knowledgeable global citizens. TOP

Science

The Science Department offers a diverse program of study which challenges students at all ability levels.  We strive to create an atmosphere of mutual respect between the teachers and the students.  The curriculum progresses from Grades 6 through Grade 12, with an understanding of the roles the sciences play in today’s world.  The middle school curriculum introduces students to environmental science, the scientific method, life sciences, and physical sciences.  High school students take biology and chemistry, as well as an elective of their choice including such options as Forensic Science, Organic Chemistry, AP Biology, and AP Chemistry.  All courses require laboratory work, research studies, small group work, and lecture components to help students develop their deductive reasoning and critical thinking skills.  In addition, teachers use demonstrations, presentations, debates, cooperative learning, and performance-based assessments to meet the needs of the varied learning styles of our students. TOP

World Languages

Studying another language provides our students with many benefits. In addition to the ability to communicate with others, they come to understand the culture, customs, and values of people from different countries. This global perspective makes them  more aware of the world around them and teaches them to appreciate diversity. As the world becomes a smaller place, language skills become a growing asset in a variety of careers. From our Exploratory Language program in Grade 6 through advanced studies, including AP courses, in French and Spanish, our students are offered opportunities to enhance their role as global citizens. TOP

Visual & Performing Arts

At Saint Bernard School, we believe everyone can be successful in the arts, from the student who is just getting started to those already experienced in their craft. Instruction, throughout Grades 6 through 12, focuses on artistic perception, creative expression, historical and cultural context, and aesthetic valuing. The curriculum fosters and nurtures each student as an artist. Students are encouraged to express ideas and emotions visually, musically, and verbally through a classical, yet collaborative, process. The curriculum covers the art and music of different and universal aspects of the arts. TOP

Physical Education

The Health and Physical Education curriculum is based on continuous education from Grades 6 through 12 and meets the State of Connecticut Health and Physical Education requirements. Our goal is to introduce students to health and fitness objectives that they will carry into a healthy adulthood. Middle school students have Health two days a week and Physical Education three days a week.  In addition to traditional PE classes, high school students may earn credit for sports season played or the completion of either the Nutrition & Exercise or Strength & Conditioning course.  Saint Bernard offers the opportunity for students to play group games, team sports not offered at Saint Bernard, and racquet sports.  They also experiment with dance, gymnastics, yoga, and Zumba, along with units on the Olympics and other topics that complement our Global Studies program. TOP
